Hybrid SUVs: Vehicles for the “Green” Family or Sports Enthusiast
It is virtually an understatement to coin the old phrase “SUVs are selling like hotcakes.” In reality, over the course of the past decade, SUVs have become a large part of the overall motor vehicle marketplace. The demand for SUVs continues to increase each year, including the demand for hybrid SUVs.
A significant number of motor vehicle manufacturers have taken to producing a line of hybrid SUVs. An increasing number of “green” consumers,” men and women interested in the wellbeing of the environment, have taken to purchasing hybrid SUVs. Hybrid SUVs have become notably popular amongst environmentally conscious men and women with families as well as “green” sports enthusiasts.
Hybrid SUVs increased in demand when fuel prices in the United States and other countries around the world started to rise, doubling over the course of a year.
Toyota was the first major automobile manufacturer to bring hybrid SUVs onto the market. Other manufacturers have followed suit with even Lexus entering into the hybrid SUVs fray in the past couple of years.
Hybrid SUVs are available in a wide range of retail prices. On the low end, a person can grab onto Toyota in the hybrid SUVs line for sticker prices beginning in the neighborhood of $22,000. On the high end, Lexus tags its hybrid SUVs beginning at $42,000.
Even the environmentally conscious Sierra Club has staked out a relatively positive position in regard to hybrid SUVs. (It is important to note that the Sierra Club and related organizations have taken a dim view of conventional SUVs. These groups, and their members, express deep concern about conventional SUVs because of their lack of fuel efficiency and because of the amount of pollutants these vehicles dump into the air during the course of their operational lifetimes.)
Hybrid SUVs are designed to automatically shift between electric and gasoline driven power elements depending on which power source will be most efficient for given driving conditions. When hybrid SUVs are operating via gasoline power, the motor works to recharge the electric battery. Most SUVs operate using electrical power at all times when moving at 25 miles per hour or lower. Additionally, if the vehicle is stopped and yet on for any notable period of time, the engine shifts from its gasoline to its electrical power source.
