GMC Sierra Hybrid to Hit the Road in Selected U.S. States
2005 marks the first time that General Motors will put two versions of the GMC Sierra Hybrid onto roadways in the United States. Specifically, the GMC Sierra Hybrid 1500 Extended Cab two wheel drive and four wheel drive models are now available with a hybrid energy system.
General Motors, in announcing the GMC Sierra Hybrid models and their availability, noted that these models are the first of their kind in a full size pickup truck. The company went on to remark that the GMC Sierra Hybrid is 10% more fuel efficient that the strictly gasoline version of the truck. According to General Motors, the GMC Sierra Hybrid offers the best highway fuel efficiency of any full size V-8 pickup truck on the market today.
Although EPA mileage tests have not yet been undertaken on the GMC Sierra Hybrid, the manufacturer maintains that (for the four wheel drive GMC Sierra Hybrid version) the truck gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 19 miles per gallon on the highway. The two wheel drive version of the GMC Sierra Hybrid is a bit more fuel efficient, getting 18 miles per gallon in city driving and 21 miles per gallon the highway. Again, these are not independent EPA estimates as of this point in time. EPA estimates likely will be available on the GMC Sierra Hybrid later in 2005.
During its introductory year in 2005, the GMC Sierra Hybrid will be available in a limited number of states, which are: Arkansas, California, Florida, Nevada and Washington. The company intends to extend the availability of the GMC Sierra Hybrid during the next model year.
In its marketing of the GMC Sierra Hybrid, General Motors pays particular attention to promoting the following features. According to the company and its marketing promos, the new GMC Sierra Hybrid includes:
- Same powerful and reliable Vortec 5300 V8 engine as the conventional gasoline truck
- Up to 10% improvement in fuel economy over the conventional gasoline pickup
- Sacrifices little in performance or towing capability
- Built in generator features four ground-fault protected 120-volt outlets
The suggested base manufacturer’s retail price for the GMC Sierra Hybrid is in the $33,000 to $37,000 range.
